Beautiful Death, Beautiful Music
Submitted by: Rodney Ronquillo
Toronto, Ontario, CanadaI am an Artist and Musician from Toronto, Canada, of Filipino Descent.
I have always been practicing the Secret ever since I picked up a Tony Robbins book in the late 90’s. But I never knew the law of attraction or what it meant back then. From what I learned, looking at things in a positive light within and reframing things really helped change my focus, and in a short time I achieved my goals. Before I knew about the Secret, I was going through a balance of negative and positive thinking, but within me I had optimism.
In my last year of College, I wrote down all the things I wanted to accomplish in 5 years after my graduation. Then I kept reminding myself of the people I love, who love me, and the things that I am grateful for. This really changed the world in my eyes, and it helped me carry on through each day with a sense of possibility and strength.
One of the things I wanted in my list of things was a wife who could sing like the little mermaid (from Disney). I had thought I met her when I started working with the cast of Toronto’s Miss Saigon musical, but I soon realized that it wouldn’t work out… at least for now. But that’s the kind of girl I wanted in my mind – and a beautiful soul.
I met a beautiful woman prior to World Youth Day, a few months before Pope John Paul came to Toronto. But we were on and off. We did love each other though.
During this time, I had been asked to play the role of Jesus in a musical called The Song of Mark. This was also freaky because one of the things I wrote in my list of wants is to be a star in a musical. And so it happened.
Then things started to go a little downhill for me. The company I worked with for so many years started downsizing. But there was more that happened… The girl I had dated before had come down with both a brain aneurysm and cancer in the base of her skull. I was fully concerned, even though I believed that she will make it through. But her conditions were so severe that she would not have any chance to make it through a coma.
I cried a lot and I wanted her to live. But the reality of the situation was becoming more apparent to me. I prayed with the hope that should would not die, but I also knew that God has a plan for all of us, even if it’s not always the way we want it to be. I had whispered to her that if she were to move on to heaven, that I would do whatever I can to work for the cause of cancer.
After her passing, many things happened that I could not explain, except that I felt that she was watching over me. I was working downtown Toronto at the time, and her cemetery was located north of the city. I prayed with the hope that I would find a job that would be close to her cemetery, so that I could visit her often. I was laid off from my downtown job and focused more on the job interviews (the creditors were also coming after me like a storm – geez, fun adventure).
I went through so many job interviews and a lot of them were unsuccessful. But one called me out of the blue and mentioned that they found my resume through workopolis. They were located just 3 minutes from my girlfriend’s cemetery!! The interviews went well and I landed the job. But I still had in mind that I wanted to work for the cause of cancer – or even any non-profit/charitable organization.
During this tenure, I met another beautiful woman who was a musician. Actually, she found me through the internet, through some friends of mine. She mentioned that she wanted to come out with her first CD. At first, I was hesitant, because not everyone is sincere in their asking. But I decided to give her a chance and looked into the project.
The first thing I wanted to know was the quality of her voice. When she sang, she sounded exactly like the Little Mermaid from Disney!! On top of that, she had a wonderful, very friendly personality. I was struck by both of these and more.
She and I eventually got married, and are living together.
On top of that, I had been offered a job with the Canadian Cancer Society – a cause that I had promised my last girlfriend that I would work for, should the opportunity come along.
That’s what’s happening for me now. But I had also used the Secret for many other things.
I also wanted to work with great musicians, especially ones on an international level. As a result, I worked with the Cast of Miss Saigon, worked with a friendly filipina international singer named Leah Navarro, a great artist in Germany named Jamie Stevens, a producer and girlgroup (who I became close friends with) from Winnipeg – named Tegancat with Jim Stoeber, and the coolest of all – I got a chance to sing on stage with a new friend of mine, Mikey Bustos, who was and still is our hero from the very first season of Canadian Idol (the equivalent to American Idol). On top of that, my wife and I were invited to record with a fellow who would later become the 2007 Canadian Idol winner – Brian Melo.
I continue to use the Secret every day in all my adventures. I will definitly post more as each gift of life comes as reality.
