Halifax, Nova Scotia, CanadaI am a mother of five, wife of 12 years, sister, aunt, photographer, photography teacher, and lunch monitor at our local school. I grew up in a 'dysfunctional family' with 8 siblings and me being the seventh of the seventh of the seventh, I was always surrounded by superstitions and conflicts growing up. It has taken me many years to open up and share my experiences, but only to those like me. Thanks for listening.
A few months ago my son was at our dentists office having a tooth repaired. He is almost 10 so I decided he could go in alone and I would take a precious break and read in the waiting room. While flipping through a magazine and totally enjoying myself, I thought I heard whimpering. Well my first thought was that my son was in trouble, and I jumped out of my seat and headed for the room he was in which was directly down the hall. The receptionist waved me back and said, “No, it’s ok, it’s not your son.” Relieved but confused I sat back down. I noticed the dentist’s assistant was quite upset and was crying. I felt terrible since I didn’t know what had happened and I felt helpless just sitting there. When my son was finished we left the office and when I asked if he knew what had happened he told me that he thought the assistant’s mother had died. Well my heart sank since I had just lost my Mom and I knew the hole I felt in my heart was still wide open.
The next time I saw her at another appointment I told her I was very sorry for her loss. Of course she was busy working and it didn’t seem like she wanted to talk about it, so I left it at that.
Just this past week after returning from a wonderful vacation at Disney, Florida, I ended up with this terrible pain starting in my forehead, and soon moved down into my eye socket and then cheek. My face felt numb and swollen. I immediately booked a dentist appointment since I’m not a big fan of doctors anyhow and I just figured this was possibly related to a filling I needed and didn’t yet have done. When I arrived and sat in the chair the assistant who had been crying that day told me she would never forget my son, since he was her patient the day she received the terrible news. I told her my son and I had talked about it later and he told me that he thought her mother had died. She then told me about her cousin, who was also her best friend, and three year old little girl who were in a terrible car accident. The mother died instantly while the little girl was kept alive on life support to arrange organ donation. The call she received after sitting with her brain dead three year old cousin was to tell her that her heart had been transplanted into a 10 year old little boy in a close by neighborhood, and that the little girl was no longer with us. My heart sank again. What do you say… something so horrible can give someone else so much joy. Not something words can explain.
Later at home I decided to cook a healthy meal for my family, and was preparing salmon and veggies when I opened a fresh bag of assorted PEI potatoes. While standing at my sink with my husband’s arms wrapped around me, and him telling me how much he loved me after I told him what had happened at the dentist’s office, I reached in the bag and the first potato I grabbed, to my amazement and joy, was shaped like a small heart. Now let me tell you that I live in the land of potatoes, and have been around them all my life of 43 years. I used to weed them as a child and my Dad even grew them. Never have I found a heart shaped one. I knew I had to do something with this heart, so I photographed it and then wrapped it in tissue and put in in a special box along with a beautiful card about how precious life is, and along with a yellow rose I rushed off to the dentist’s office. I didn’t even know the assistant’s name, and she had gone for the weekend. I can’t wait until Monday (tomorrow) until she gets this gift.
I read The Secret when it first came out since I’m always online and heard about it early. My chiropractor had loaned me the video, and to tell the truth I watched it over and over even though I felt I already knew this secret. It was like finally someone talking my talk. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe in my own power and how I can change other lives. By taking a few moments of my time I’m hoping to make someone feel special, and that life is always giving us good things if we look for them.
I hope this story inspires your readers to do something special for others, and you’ll be amazed at what will come your way if you’re open. Have a wonderful day and thank you.
