Giving us Tickets
Submitted by: Jonathan E
High Point, NCI am a pharmacist 36 yo and a believer for many years. The Secret is the best distillation of all that I have read over the years that it has become a main source of inspiration.
It was a rainy day in May of 2006. I was just finished with a divorce –the end of an 11 year relationship. I needed something beautiful in my life. I had drug myself up from the depths of despair and just needed a moment of beauty. I knew that Cirque Du Soleil was coming to town and decided I was going. I wanted to take my Mom. She was a huge support for me during troubled times and I just wanted to thank her. When she committed I started the process of finding tickets. I have never had problems getting tickets to anything. In fact I have more than I need and often have trouble giving them away. I called every ticket broker, the box office and even Cirque Du Soleil headquaters in Canada with no luck. I made seven phone calls the day of the show! I finally laughed out loud and said, “someone must have tickets for me”. Then I called my mom and said, “I don’t have tickets yet, but someone is going to give us tickets!” I made an attempt to buy tix before the show by going to the venue but the box office was closed 2hrs before showtime!
I was to meet mom at a local restaurant. Before she showed up I sat in the truck in the torrential rain just laughing at the “Circus” this had become. I told the bartender over a glass of wine that someone was just going to give us tickets. Meanwhile everyone around discussed the show they were headed to with tickets in hand. The bartender looked at me like I was absolutely crazy. Mom showed up and we affirmed that we would have tickets and both laughed. Our meal was great and we left on time to stop by the box office.
As we walked to the ticket counter I felt like we should just not rush things. We were 3rd in line ….then we were next…But I couldn’t step up to the smiling salesperson. Then I felt it….a tap on the shoulder. I turned around and well dressed African-American grandmother said, “Do you need tickets?” I replied “I do” and she handed me 4 and sped away without a word. $100 each! Someone – a stranger – just handed me $400 worth of tickets! My Mom’s face was glowing and we both had tears and laughter bursting out of us.
But here’s where the story gets even better. We had 4 tickets and only 2 of us. I said, “Mom we have to pass this on right now to the right people.” We stood patiently to the side and waited until “they” showed up. Two college freshmen girls from the local university with wide eyes and not a dime between them looking for $85 seats-the cheapest in the house. We walked over and asked if they would like tickets and then handed them the better of the two seats. Hugs and shrieks were exchanged and then I told them the story and tears flowed from their eyes just as they had from ours. One great show followed a great lesson.
I hold those two tickets in my journal as a frequent reminder of the beauty in life. This was the Secret in practice before I met The Secret. To me the best part of this story was that we were able to share this “Universal Wealth” and this story immediately. Now that I’ve seen the movie and read the book and have this website……bring on the Wealth that I may overflow and share with those in need for all my days!
