Belief and the LOA: How to Change What You Attract

If you haven’t yet manifested many of the things you desire, chances are you’ve lost some faith in the truth of the Law of Attraction or at least in your ability to apply it in your life. Working the LOA is sometimes, at first, like buying a new appliance: it’s capable of doing all kinds of wonderful things, but you don’t understand which buttons to push to get the desired results. So the machine sits in the corner unused most of the time, just because you don’t know the subtleties of using it.

Supposing you got out the instructions and really read them, then asked an expert to explain any parts you didn’t understand. Suddenly your new appliance would become a real part of your life – you’d be using it all the time and it would do fantastic work for you.

So many people got excited about the Law of Attraction when Oprah featured The Secret DVD stars on her show. That was like buying the new appliance. Millions did it. But how many followed through on learning how to really use the thing? That’s what this newsletter tries to do. It aims to help you trouble-shoot working the LOA so you become adept at all its features and intricacies. Then this law of the universe will produce for you anything you ask of it.

How Faith Affects Success

Now back to the subject of faith. The LOA is a law of the universe that works whether you believe in it or not. Gravity is a similar law. You don’t have to believe in it for the Law of Gravity to function. If you drop a stone from the top of a building, the object will hit the ground below, whether you have faith that it will or not.

In the same way, the Law of Attraction brings us what we focus on, whether we believe that or not and whether we like it or not. If we think negative, depressing thoughts, our outer reality is going to be negative and depressing. If we think joyful, upbeat thoughts, our outer reality will be positive and fun. If we think a mix, our life is a mix of good things and bad.

As Mike Dooley says in his course, Manifesting Change, you may not always get what you want, but for sure you always get what you think about. That’s the Law of Attraction. And that’s why thoughts are so important, because it’s not just what we intentionally think, when we make affirmations, that draws stuff into our lives – what we think unconsciously, through habit, also draws stuff into our lives, and may even negate what we consciously affirm.

If every morning you affirm three times, “I weigh 135 pounds,” then have mind chatter all day long about how hard it is to diet and how you’ll never really get thin, which thoughts are more likely to manifest in your life, those three slim ones or those dozens of fat ones?

Attracting What We Believe

And this is where belief comes in. Belief does not make the Law of Attraction work, because the LOA works by itself. But belief does decide WHAT we attract, the bad stuff or the good, failure or success. The negative “doomed-to-failure” thoughts come from our lack of belief. We need to root them out and replace them with thoughts that represent what we desire, not thoughts of how it is at the moment.

So how do we do that? How do we change our beliefs about ourselves and what we have a right to expect from life? Here are a few tips:

  • Visualize to dissolve any blocks of disbelief   When you first wake up in the morning, consecrate at least ten minutes to sitting up in bed or in a chair – no interruptions by kids or the cat – and visualize what you want in your day and/or in your life. Picture it, dream it, just the way you imagined things when you were a child. Just fantasize, seeing yourself having what you want. Don’t fantasize on HOW it’s going to come to you – leave that to the universe. Don’t mess with that part, or you’ll mess up the manifestation. Just see yourself having and enjoying what you wish for.

    For instance, if you want to own a new green VW Beetle, see yourself parking it inside your garage, or driving it through the countryside. Imagine from INSIDE the car, inside the mental movie. The more you do this, the more you’ll have the feeling of actually owning and driving that Beetle, and that will increase your belief in the possibility of having it.

    It’s amazing how that works. Imagining somehow convinces us at a very deep level that something can be so. And that belief, which is a form of acceptance, allows the universe to bring it to our door. The universe can’t deliver what we cannot psychologically accept. If you really can’t see yourself owning a green beetle, you have a block to receiving it. The universe can’t get through that block without your permission. Visualizing helps dissolve the block of disbelief.


  • Identify doubts, then tweak your affirmations to root them out Throughout the day, remind yourself of the wonderful thing you are the process of manifesting. Design a simple, one-sentence statement that sums up what that is. Repeat that affirmation throughout the day, especially when thoughts come that seem contrary to it. If thoughts come up that indicate real doubt the thing you’re manifesting, sit down and examine those thoughts for their truth or error. If there’s merit to the them – if they show you a block that stands in the way of your dream – then work on manifesting removal of that block. If the doubtful thoughts come from fear or low self-esteem, then work on manifesting the removal of those things.

    These should become separate manifestations you work on, distinct from your main desire. If the doubt is, “I can never be thin because I don’t want to give up eating what I like,” you could construct a new affirmation to address this. For instance, you could affirm, first thing in the morning and often throughout the day, “I only like to eat what’s supports my health and my perfect weight,” “I spontaneously decline food that isn’t useful,” or “I easily make food choices that are good for me.”

    Such affirmations change your attitude toward what you LIKE to consume, making it easy to eat in a way that sheds pounds. Instead of affirming “I only eat what’s good for me,” when that brings up your disbelief, you tweak the affirmation to accommodate and override that doubt, adding “like to” between “only” and “eat. “I only LIKE TO eat what’s good for me.” The revised affirmation not only targets your weight but your belief about what you like to eat. It works, in the case of this example, because it removes the thing blocking the desire at the same time as it works on manifesting the desire itself.

    We know someone who designed and actually uses the above affirmations. After years of trying to lose weight unsuccessfully, she is now moving toward her goal weight, and with ease! To get there, she had to address the block to her belief: her thought that she could never get thin because she didn’t want to give up what she liked eating. By mentally programming herself to change what she LIKED, she became able to diet easily because now she only eats what she wants to, but what she wants to eat is always wholesome food. See how the affirmation tweaking works?


  • Inspire yourself with true stories of other people’s dreams manifesting in their lives   Hearing about how other people went from rags to riches, or loneliness to a great relationship, builds your own belief that something like that could also happen to you. There are lots of books, DVDs, and CDs on the market to help in this way, and attending seminars by inspiring speakers who are expert manifesters helps, too.

    In our own case, we had actually known about success principles for years before we started to really apply them and see results. It wasn’t until we read two books that deeply inspired us that we “got it” and began to successfully work the Law of Attraction and get what we wished for. Those books were full of true stories that made all the difference in our ability to believe. Once we believed – accepted – that good things could come to us by visualizing, affirming, and replacing bad thoughts with good ones, we quit second-guessing ourselves and our lives turned around quite miraculously, in just about every department.

    Everyone we know who’s successful with the LOA had the same experience at some time or other. The LOA starts to work for your desires once you fully accept that miracles are possible, and there’s nothing like the success stories of others to generate one’s acceptance of the miraculous.

Next Week

The books that changed our lives are the two we keep harping about, Murphy’s The Power of Your Subconscious Mind and Neville’s The Law and The Promise, but that was years ago, and there are now dozens of other products on the market that teach and inspire. One we just discovered is Mike Dooley’s Manifesting Change, which we will write more about next week. It’s a CD set that really has revved our engines. Even when you know this material, it’s easy to forget it, because the messages we get from the world are that miracles are NOT possible, and we tend to get lost in those messages (unless we really stay focused). We find that occasionally studying things that remind us of the truth is very important to our family’s continued success. They get us back on track, whenever we veer off, and help us start manifesting by intention again.
